Chestnut sagre, wine harvests, olive walks and Halloween traditions across all 4 provinces: your full October guide to Abruzzo!
October Events: Out and About in Abruzzo
- Bisenti, Revival dell'Uva e del Vino Montonico
The 52nd edition of Bisenti's own grape, a folkloristic four days built around the Montonico vine, one of the Teramano hills' most characterful autochthonous whites, with tastings, seminars from working enologists and the kind of unhurried village hospitality that makes the drive up from the coast worth it.
- FLIC, Festival Lanciano in Contemporanea, closing weekend
The final weekend of Lanciano's twelfth contemporary dance, theatre and music festival, spilling out of the Teatro Fenaroli into Piazza Plebiscito and, on the closing night, the Cattedrale della Madonna del Ponte itself.
- Filetto Beer Fest
A small village's tidy little tribute to Bavaria, hot pretzels, würstel, sausages and Sacher torte in Piazza Nuova, with fresh beer and live music into the evening. Moves indoors to the palestra comunale if the weather turns.
- Mostra Mercato del Tartufo, Quadri
Quadri's self-styled "Città del Tartufo" opens its lanes for the season's truffle market, dishes built around the tuber, a truffle-hunting dog competition and the usual stalls of local produce squeezed into a genuinely tiny hill village.
- Campo di Zucche Pumpkin Patch, Cappelle sul Tavo
A proper pumpkin field to explore, pony rides, workshops, entertainment and lunch, the kind of easy half-day that starts October's run of farm visits before Halloween itself arrives.
- Festa dell'Uva, Alanno Scalo
A long-running grape festival, an all-day affair that traditionally closes with communal dancing in the piazza, the culmination of Alanno's whole summer-into-autumn food calendar rather than a standalone date.
- Fattoria Valle Magica Pumpkin Patch, Carapelle Calvisio
A mountain-set pumpkin patch with animals, games and music, up on the Gran Sasso side rather than the coast, a good pairing with a Navelli saffron morning.
- Domenica al Museo
Free entry to state museums and monuments nationwide for the first Sunday of the month, Abruzzo's share includes the Museo Archeologico Nazionale/Villa Frigerj in Chieti, the museum in Campli, and Celano Castle's Museo d'Arte Sacra.
- Cammino della Transumanza lungo il Tratturo Magno
The nineteenth edition of the old shepherds' walk along the Tratturo Magno, 244 km in ten stages from Collemaggio to Puglia, free and joinable for a single day or the whole route. October's stages run through Rosciano, Vacri, Lanciano, Casalbordino and Vasto before crossing into Molise and on to the Foggia finish, with a welcome celebration from the Comune di Foggia and the Ufficio Tratturi waiting at the end.
- Cantine Nella Roccia, Tagliacozzo
The tenth anniversary edition of an open-cellar weekend unlike any other in the region, over sixty cantine carved directly into the rock along the old Via Valeria, with wine, soups, fresh bread, roast chestnuts, street bands and a free shuttle bus running the town.
- Fiera di Ottobre, Arischia
L'Aquila's own hamlet fair, equestrian displays, a country-music night, a beer tent and the "Roccale d'Oro" music contest, a proper small-town October weekend rather than a food-first sagra.
- Festa della Castagna, Intermesoli, Pietracamela
A chestnut festival in a different frazione of Crognaleto from the truffle weekend down the road at Poggio Umbricchio, this one squarely about the chestnut itself, high on the Gran Sasso slopes.
- Lungo le Antiche Rue, Civitella Roveto
A historic-streets festival built around autumn colour and local produce in the Valle Roveto, chestnuts and heritage together rather than a single-ingredient sagra.
- Festa della Castagna, Carsoli
A second Aquilano chestnut weekend, roast chestnuts, local dishes and craft stalls in the piazza.
- La Transumanza delle Vacche, Montorio al Vomano
A cattle transumanza tradition rather than the more familiar sheep-and-shepherd version, a genuinely different angle on the same old seasonal movement between mountain and valley.
- Camminata tra gli Olivi
A national Città dell'Olio day, olive-grove walks, working frantoi opened to visitors, and bread-and-oil tastings to finish, run across towns in all four provinces: Casoli, Fossacesia, Bucchianico, Rapino, Archi, Bomba and San Vito Chietino in Chieti; Atri, Bisenti, Controguerra, Montefino, Sant'Omero and Pineto in Teramo; Città Sant'Angelo, Elice, Collecorvino, Loreto Aprutino, Moscufo, Pianella and Tocco da Casauria in Pescara; Bugnara, Raiano and Vittorito in L'Aquila. Fossacesia's walk passes the Abbazia di San Giovanni in Venere above the Golfo di Venere, and Pianella opens its historic D'Annibale mill for the day.
- Sagra della Castagna Roscetta, Canistro
The valley's best-known chestnut, celebrated with talks, tastings and a proper village weekend built entirely around it.
- Sagra della Castagna, San Felice d'Ocre
A smaller, quieter chestnut weekend on the same dates as Canistro, worth knowing about as an alternative if the bigger sagra gets crowded.
- Teatro Massimo, Pescara
A theatrical production about living with borderline personality disorder, the kind of serious drama the Teatro Massimo programmes well outside its usual comedy-and-classics run.
- Abruzzo Horror Film Festival, L'Aquila
The twelfth edition of the region's horror-short competition, running straight through UK half term, international submissions, competitive categories and the festival's own prize, the cleaver.
- Tuber Magnatum, Poggio Umbricchio
A white truffle weekend deep in the Gran Sasso, foliage, live music and a proper multi-course truffle menu in a mountain village that's been running this for a decade.
- La Notte delle Lumère, Santo Stefano di Sessanio
Abruzzo's own genuine autumn tradition, not an import, pumpkin and turnip lanterns carved to guide the souls of the dead, itinerant storytelling through the village lanes, a donkey-led walk and a themed dinner, tied to the old Capetiempe calendar rather than Halloween itself.
- Sagra della Castagna e della Patata, Valle Castellana
Confirmed for this year and landing right on Halloween itself, a Monti della Laga tradition built around the valley's chestnuts and mountain potatoes, stands open from late morning in Piazza G. D'Annunzio.
- Sagra della Castagna, Sante Marie
A third Aquilano chestnut weekend closing out the month, landing on the same dates as Valle Castellana and Poggio Umbricchio, three chestnut-and-truffle closers all sharing the same Halloween weekend.
- Halloween at Roccascalegna Castle
An annual fixture of the castle's own calendar, torches, tales and an illusionist through its stone halls, one of the better-known Halloween nights in the region.
- Halloween in Fortezza, Civitella del Tronto
The last bastion of the old Kingdom of Naples turns spooky for the night, an annual fixture in the fortress's own programme.
- L'Aneme de le Morte, Serramonacesca
Another of Abruzzo's own genuine folk traditions, carved pumpkin heads representing wandering souls, vino cotto, vin brulé, fried pizzas, roast sausages, folk music and a sunset pumpkin-carving contest, "La checocce chiò belle."
- La Tavola dei Morti, Spoltore
Quieter and more ritual than Serramonacesca's version, a candlelit procession through the village pausing to tell stories about the dead briefly returning home for the night.
- Campo delle Zucche, Collecorvino
A Halloween-special day at the pumpkin patch, with a second weekend following on into November.
- Navelli, saffron flowering and hand-harvest
Not a sagra but an experience: the Piana di Navelli turns violet as the Zafferano dell'Aquila DOP comes into flower, picked by hand at dawn. The Cooperativa Altopiano di Navelli runs guided harvest mornings, dawn picking, hands-on processing, walks along the tratturo and visits to Navelli, Bominaco and Fontecchio. Not to be confused with Navelli's Sagra dei Ceci e dello Zafferano, which is in August and uses stored saffron, this is the fresh harvest itself.
- Alice Di Deo exhibition, Cinema Auditorium Zambra, Ortona
A jazz, vintage and modernity themed exhibition, free entry, running out its final weeks through the first half of October.
- Teramo International Street Food
Street food vans and stalls from across Italy and beyond fill the city centre for four days right in the run-up to half term.
- Cantine Aperte in Vendemmia
MTV Abruzzo member wineries open their doors for the harvest, hands-on grape picking, guided pressing and tastings straight from the producers. Vendemmia weekend is also the moment to ask for the region's rarer autochthonous whites by name, Cococciola, concentrated around Villamagna, Vacri, Ari and Rocca San Giovanni in Chieti, and Passerina and Montonico, more common on the Teramo and Pescara hills. None has its own festival this month, they're simply what's in the glass at the wineries already open.
- Original-language cinema
UCI Cinemas Megalò in Chieti runs a standing original-language slot every Wednesday, part of a circuit-wide weekly series shown at 40+ cinemas nationally, the film changes week to week. Città del Cinema in Vasto also carries an active original-language slot on its own schedule.
- Opera Demopratica Public Program, L'Aquila
Twenty-five events, performances, talks, exhibitions, workshops and walks, threaded through L'Aquila's year as European Capital of Culture.
- MAXXI L'Aquila & Palazzo Ardinghelli, major autumn exhibition
Described by the museum itself as the most anticipated show of the autumn, opened in late September and running through the whole of October.
- Teofilo Patini, Le verità dipinte, Museo Paparella Treccia, Pescara
An anthological exhibition on the Abruzzese verismo painter Teofilo Patini, unflinching depictions of peasant life, poverty and labour, shown alongside the museum's own collection of 151 antique Castelli maioliche. €8 full, €6 reduced, free under 8.
- La scuola di Barbizon e le radici dell'impressionismo, Museo dell'Ottocento, Pescara
A Barbizon School exhibition tracing impressionism's roots, running through the autumn and into the new year.
- Feste patronali di Santa Reparata e San Gilberto, Casoli
Casoli's own patronal weekend, the kind of proper small-town festa that doesn't need a gastronomic hook to draw a crowd.
