About Castel Castagne

Perched in the foothills of the Gran Sasso, Castel Castagna is a village with roots dating back to pre-Roman times.

Over the centuries, it became a strategic outpost for the Romans and later flourished during the medieval era.

The village is famed for the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano, a 12th-century Romanesque masterpiece that is a testament to its historical significance.

Today, Castel Castagna invites visitors to wander its cobblestone streets, admire its stone houses, and revel in the timeless beauty of its Teramana landscapes.

What is Candelora?

Candelora was originally called Lupercalia in the Pagan Calendar.  It was celebrated on the 14th of February and represented a time of life or death, illness or health (hence February is known as the fever month).  It was the period when hungry wolves began approaching sheepfolds after a long hard winter.

Weather proverbs sprung up around this time that forecast how long winter had left to run:

“If it snows or rains we’re out of winter

If there is sunshine we are in the middle of winter!”

The Catholic Church adopted this ancient event and moved it to the 2nd of February, 40 days after Christmas.  It combined this and the Jewish tradition of a newborn male child being presented at the temple, today was the day they believe that Jesus was presented at the temple and Mary purified. Candles were blessed to enlighten congregations.
