San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore

Let’s get horny takes on a whole new meaning in San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore in homage to San Martino who is the protector of betrayed husbands as well as winemakers with its processione dei cornuti.

The men of the village create a carnival procession through the town ringing cowbells and carrying cow and goat horns that are carried as relics and a polite phallic symbol whilst singing the ‘Congrega’.

Groups of children follow with jack-o-lanterns begging for sweets and money.

The evening ends with the dance of the pupa, a papier mache puppet in the shape of a lady that dances with exploding fireworks hosted to its back!

The men will gather to eat the special festa dish, spezzatino alla cornuta, a rich, stew-like warming dish that deserves to be tried!
