European Museum Night 2026 in Abruzzo
23 May @ 17:00 - 23:30 CEST

Step into the magic of culture after dark during the European La Notte dei Musei, when museums across Abruzzo open their doors for an unforgettable evening of art, history, and discovery all under the stars. On this special night, you’ll experience exhibitions, guided tours, performances, and family-friendly events, often for free or at a symbolic cost. Whether you’re drawn to ancient Roman ruins, medieval fortresses, or contemporary art, there’s something inspiring for everyone.
On Saturday, 23 May, museums all over Europe stay open late for the Notte Europea dei Musei, or European Museum Night. The event celebrates its 22nd year in 2026.
It’s more than just staying open late. Museums come alive after dark with live theatre, music, guided tours, and family workshops inspired by their collections. The atmosphere changes at night, and the events are meant to welcome you in, not just move you past displays. In Italy, state museums and many city museums only charge €1 for entry, and some are even free. It’s one of the most affordable cultural nights of the year, and a great way to spend an evening, whether you’re curious or just looking for a unique place to relax.
This year’s theme is especially meaningful: “Museums Uniting a Divided World.” At a time when public life can feel dominated by the loudest voices and the wealthiest people, museums offer a quieter perspective. They remind us that what we share, language, landscape, food, faith, craft, and the rivers that shaped our towns, matters more than the divisions of any single news story. Visiting a museum at night with neighbours and strangers is a simple way to find common ground.
Here are the Abruzzo venues confirmed so far, listed by province.

L’Aquila Province

At 21:00, the castle will host “Le stanze del tempo,” the launch event for Voces Theatre Experience, a new live performance and visit program by Direzione Regionale Musei Nazionali Abruzzo. The project is funded by the Ministry of Culture’s Direzione Generale Spettacolo and is artistically directed by the Teatro Lanciavicchio company from Avezzano, with dramaturg Stefania Evandro and director Antonio Silvagni.
“Le stanze del tempo” is the project’s main feature. This site-specific show was previously known as History Trekking (2024) and Scenari d’Arte (2025). The audience is divided into small groups and guided through the castle rooms by a mysterious governess. Each room becomes a different scene. The story focuses on the Fucino: ten actors and musicians from Abruzzo tell the history of the lake that once filled the plain below the castle, its first drainage by Emperor Claudius in 52 AD with the famous naumachia, and the second drainage by Prince Alessandro Torlonia in the late 1800s. The stories shift between the lake gods, peasants, engineers, and powerful figures.
In 2024 and 2025, tickets were €10 full price and €6 reduced, but for Museum Night 2026, the show is included in the €1 castle entry.
The Museo Archeologico Antinum and Osservatorio Geo-Astronomico Torre Colonna in Civita d’Antino will be open from 17:00 to 24:00. The evening is organised by the Comune di Civita d’Antino and the Associazione Sorana Astrofili (ASA). The archaeological museum displays finds from the ancient Marsi people of Valle Roveto. The observatory, located high above the village, will be open for night sky-watching from the tower. For information and booking, call 339 1691996 or email associazionesoranaastrofili@gmail.com.
MuNDA, Museo Nazionale d’Abruzzo in L’Aquila, will be open late from 19:00 to 23:00, with the ticket office closing at 22:00. Entry is €1. Museum staff will lead guided tours at 20:00 and 21:00. No booking is needed; spots are filled on the night until full. With L’Aquila as the Italian Capital of Culture this year, this is a great late-evening choice in the city. See our review.
