The Festa dei Banderesi, is a historic and colourful multi-day event held annually in May in Bucchianico (CH) in celebration of Sant’Urbano. Its most famous parade is of traditionally dressed locals carrying very ornate flower bask(made with crepe paper) and decorated tractors and floats. The celebrations continue with flag-waving and medieval re-enactments. This festival is rich in history, tradition, and local culture, making it a captivating event for both locals and tourists.

Key Features of the Bucchianico Festa
1. The Historical Parade
One of the main attractions of the festival is the grand historical parade, featuring participants dressed in medieval costumes. The parade showcases various figures, including knights, nobles, and common folk, representing the social hierarchy of the time.
2. The Challenge of the Banderesi
This is a playful yet competitive event where different “contrade” (neighbourhoods) of the town challenge each other in games that test skill and bravery, reminiscent of historical challenges. The challenges are usually based on traditional games and can include equestrian displays.
3. Crafts and Gastronomy
The festival also offers an excellent opportunity to explore local crafts and gastronomic delights. Stalls and booths are set up throughout the town, selling traditional Abruzzese foods, wines, and handmade crafts.
4. Music and Dance
Traditional music and dance are integral parts of the Bucchianico Festa, with performances taking place in the town squares and streets, adding to the lively atmosphere.
