Barisciano (AQ) – Santa Caterina Fair
Saturday 26 November 2022

The sweet town of Barisciano celebrates Santa Caterina by hosting a bustling fair. Today in many countries Caterina is more commonly known today by the firework named in honour of her rather unpleasant death on a wheel, but local Gran Sasso farmers used to believe the milk that flowed from her neck nourished and protected their fields!
The fair was once the most popular of all the harvest markets to the villages and towns located on the Navelli Plain. Amongst the sales of the harvest, it hosted a spice auction for local saffron growers when the weight of this red gold was determined. This was the fair to stock up and make ready for the coming snowy winter, with the profits creating dowries and a bottom drawer for the brides to be married the following June and women would wear their wealth to attract a future husband to the market.
Beyond local craft and art stalls enjoy roasted chestnuts, lentil and sausage soup, mulled wine and hot chocolate, all using local products. Animals will be available for children to meet and pet ad a magic show and there will be local music for the adults.
After the mass at S Maurizio which begins at 4.30 pm, there will be a procession followed by a firework display in the Piazzale della fonte grande.
