Giro d’italia 2026 – Stage 7: Formia to Blockhaus, 244km
15 May @ 10:55 - 16:50 CEST
Free
The longest stage of the 2026 Giro and its first proper summit finish, this haul rolls up the southern Lazio coast through Sperlonga and Gaeta, slips through Molise via Rionero Sannitico, then drops into Abruzzo at Castel di Sangro for the first KOM at Roccaraso, crests the Passo San Leonardo and descends to Roccamorice, where the final 13km climb begins. For almost 10km, the gradient exceeds 9%, with peaks of 14%, and the route finishes on the high plateau of the Maiella massif within the Maiella National Park, on a climb named after a 19th-century Bourbon-era military fortification. It’s the ascent that scripted Jai Hindley’s maglia rosa in 2022, and on Friday, it will do its job again, splitting the GC into believers and survivors.
- Departure: From Formia – 10:55
- Arrival: at Blockhaus 16:50 (at an average speed, 41 km/h)
Make a Day of It
If you fancy making a day of it, the finish is a place worth lingering. Park near Rifugio Bruno Pomilio and take the gentle ridge walk to the Tavola dei Briganti, a scatter of limestone slabs at roughly 2,100m carved with messages, crosses and symbols between 1861 and 1867, the work of ex-soldiers turned highwaymen who fought on the losing side for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and used these high bluffs as a hideout, with later additions left by shepherds bringing flocks up to summer pasture. Pair an hour up there among the mughi pines with the riders crossing the line, and you have one of the most singular spectator experiences the Giro will offer all month.
