Fano Adriano’s Mountain Magic: A Journey of Renewal with Life in Abruzzo

Embark on a Midsummer Gentle Adventure in the Heart of Abruzzo on Saturday, 28th June

Are you seeking a unique midsummer escape that blends rich history, vibrant culture, and gentle outdoor adventures in the stunning Abruzzo mountains? Join Life in Abruzzo for an unforgettable pop-up discovering the best of Fano Adriano in the Gran Sasso Mountains!  It’s a village that beautifully intertwines its ancient past with a resilient, thriving present, post the L’Aquila earthquake.  The local community came together to build a cooperative to help push this medieval town as an ideal smart or remote work destination with shared co-living space, and in May, it twinned with Navelli and will begin growing DOP saffron ready to harvest this autumn!

This experience is perfect for anyone yearning to explore something a little different in Abruzzo,  with the choice to come for the morning or just the afternoon and evening.  There will be alternative supervised activities offered to children if they do not wish to participate with adults.  For those that want to stay over, accommodation is offered at €35 per person, €17.50 for children, including breakfast.  Dogs are welcome.

The Programme

If you fancy a local history top-up, the local Ethnographic Museum in Cerqueto will be open from 10.00 for free if you wish to visit before our first stop!

11.30 – Senarica – La Casa di Cura

A visit to Senarica, where ‘Tucci in Italy’ first stopped in Abruzzo to try Timballo, and where we will be having a refreshing liquid gold!  You will be guests of the much-acclaimed microbrewery, La Casa di Cura, for a quick beer tasting, perfect after a drive on a hot summer’s day!    They brew all the traditional types like IPAs, but have branched out to have cider, a non-alcoholic beer, a probiotic range including a saffron “kombucha sour saison, Scotch Ale, Russian Stout, Belgian style fruit beer made with Montepulciano d’Abruzzo just to name a few!  You may have heard of them as they did a tie-in with Rewilding and created a blackberry beer!

13.00 – Fano Adriano,  Lunch at MOM or Taverna 7 Effe

There will be a choice of restaurants:

MOM –  a gastronomic vegan tasting menu of either 4 or 5 dishes by one of Italy’s most accomplished vegan chefs, Gina Di Benedetto.  Her restaurant was first included in the Gambero Rosso Guide in 2023 and has received the Tradizione Futura award.

You can order a couple of dishes or try the 4-plate tasting menu, €45 or the 5-plate tasting menu, €55.  The June Menu consists of

15.30-16.30

After lunch, we take a guided bilingual storytelling walk through the charming village, discovering its stone alleys and the beautiful Church of Saints Peter and Paul that is regarded as one of the jewels of sacred art in the Gran Sasso mountains.

This medieval town was likely built upon an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Emperor Hadrian, as Fanum in Latin translates as temple. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Fano Adriano endured a period of isolation, intensified by the destruction of Strada Cecilia, its only link to Rome. By the 15th century, the area became part of the Kingdom of 2 Sicilies under the rule of the Orsini family until Italy’s unification.

16.30-18.30 Prato di Selva

After a short drive, you will be invited to connect with nature on a gentle, cool and easy walk through the meadows and forests of Prato Selva.  We will use the well-worn centuries-old paths of the shepherds and charcoal burners.

This relaxing hike through high meadows and shaded woods will be led by a knowledgeable local bilingual guide. The cooling trail winds through the natural area of Prato Selva will keep you feeling fresh, and you will walk on easy, accessible paths, offering wonderful moments of direct contact with nature without the need for steep climbs. Enjoy the brief pauses to listen to the sounds of the forest, observe the local flora, and soak in the tranquil mountain atmosphere.

19:30 – 19:50

A 20-minute drive will bring us to the peaceful Hermitage of the Annunziata, which enjoys extraordinary views and was first recorded back in the 14th century.

20:00 – 21:30

Here you’ll witness a magical midsummer sunset over the Gran Sasso. Indulge in a special apertivo, including the ancient “scurpelle that predate the scrippelle that are used for timballo.  Music will be provided by Napolitan guitarist and singer Marta del Zanna, stars will begin to twinkle in the clear Abruzzo sky. It’s the perfect way to end a day of discovery.
