3 Archaeology – San Rustico, Bascianio

The ABAP Superintendency in the provinces of L’Aquila and Teramo offers you the chance to visit its archaeology events on Saturday 5th November.

In the afternoon you are invited to tour San Rustico, Basciano from 15.30 which is located in a flat area that originated at the confluence of the Mavone river with the Vomano river.

For some 15 centuries up to the sixth-century AD, this was the seat of the most important river civilization of the valley that housed up to 1000 people with a temple dedicated to Hercules (protector of shepherds). Excavated on multiple digs since 1886 there have been a number of important finds in the necropolis including the burial of war chariots in the graves and this inebriated old lady vase which is modelled on anus ebria that displayed many social classes lived here.  Most of what has been found can be seen in Teramo’s Archaeological Museum.
