Sunday Live in Abruzzo: And the Land Won, Beating Giants

Beating Giants in Abruzzo

Join us on Sunday 12th December for a very special Sunday Live in Abruzzo with Maria Rita D’Orsogna on Zoom who will be discussing her winning battle against the fossil fuel companies and government drilling in Abruzzo.  For those seeking a little hope in these turbid times, and how every little helps in this climate emergency this could be the remedy!

Maria is an Italian American maths professor at California State University who together with the late Fabrizia Arduini took on the fossil fuel giants and beat them to protect the land, the wildlife, and people of Abruzzo from the offshore extraction of oil and gas extraction within Abruzzo.

Her family is from Lanciano (CH), and she grew up between here and The Bronx, which is where her parents migrated to before they returned to Abruzzo on their retirement hence her still regular visits to the region.

When you do nothing, you feel overwhelmed and powerless.
but when you get involved,
you feel the sense of hope and accomplishment that comes from
knowing you are working to make things better.”

The 2 projects she fought such a protracted battle with oil, gas companies and government against are:

  • Drilling on Ombrina Mare, an oil reserve just 7km (3 miles) off the coastline of San Vito Chietino and the Trabocchi Coast, a beautiful, rich environmental coastline area by ENI and the UK company Rockhopper.
  • Countering the US company Forest Oil’s plans in drilling 5 gas wells and installing a gas treatment facility at Lago Bomba, in the Sangro Valley, pictured in the banner above.

You can read the history up to 2018 of how the activists won the battle here, the battle for Lake Bomba was only secured in the autumn of 2021!

Maria will give a short presentation and invite questions on her experience in Abruzzo and can answer climate emergency questions and provide tips on activism.
