Join us for a historical hands-on Abruzzo excursion on Thursday 8th August to explore the rich cultural and archaeological heritage of Abruzzo, the region that gave birth to the name ‘Italia’.

“We do not follow maps to buried treasure, and X never, ever marks the spot” Indiana Jones

As you arrive at Pescara you will be invited to share a scrumptious Italian breakfast whilst we go over all-important safety rules for our day out, and are ready for collection by our air-conditioned minibus.

Stories and Stones

We’ll join our history guide for an enthralling ‘back in time’ tour at the National Abruzzo Archaeological Museum housed in a neo-classical villa in Chieti.  The guide will interweave stories of Abruzzo’s first inhabitants, the Vestini, Peligni and Marrucini, Carricini, Sabini, Frentani, Equi and Marsi tribes and the expansion of Rome, with museum highlights that includes the Capestrano Warrior from the museum’s acclaimed collection that date from pre-historic to late antiquity.

Valley Lunch

On our way to our excavation site, we’ll stop for a delicious 3-course local lunch in Fara Filiorum PetriThe town is famous throughout Italy for the 3 -metre high reed torches that are lit to celebrate San Antonio Abate in January and its recipe for Cipollata using its own DOP flat-bottomed onions.

Archaeology at Iuvanum

Upon arrival at Iuvanum our Archaeology Professor from Chieti University will bring this well-preserved site to life.  Its incarnations stretch from the Bronze age when it was inhabited by a Samnite tribe known as the Carricini, to when it became a Roman town and later a Benedictine monastery built using stones from the ancient town.

We’ll learn the skills involved in excavating archaeological remains and work together to see if we can uncover glimpses from the past for the university and for display purposes at the museum.

At 18:00 after a fantastic day uncovering Abruzzo’s heritage, the minibus will depart back to our starting point of  Pescara the arrival time 19:30.
