Good Friday in Penne, turn up the volume and listen to the choir singing La Miserere by Allegri.

Penne’s Venerdi Santo (Good Friday) procession is one of the riches of the Easter traditions in Abruzzo and dates back to 1570, the second oldest Good Friday procession in Abruzzo.  Expect candle-lined streets and votive candles on house doorsteps as you walk up the hill and weave through the narrow streets behind the solemn funeral procession of the dead Christ.

The procession runs right through the historic centre, from Colle Sacro to Colle Castello from 19.00 after mass and back.  Parking is surprisingly easy despite Penne being a popular town!
