Colledimezzo invites you to join them to discover the local traditions associated with one of the most important saints celebrated across Abruzzo, San Antonio Abate!
Sant’Andonie de jennare (St. Anthony of January), also known in the Abruzzo dialect as Sant’Andonie de lu porche is recognised as the protector of domestic animals, livestock, farmers, fire and skin diseases. It is tradition to light the fire of Sant’Antonio during the feast, because the fire symbolises the Saint’s ability to snatch the souls of sinners from the flames of hell.
During the festival, it is traditional in Colledimezzo to eat pasta with beans cooked with pork rind, see the delicious recipe. This being an ancient festival of the uttermost importance to local farmers, it was the dish of rural society, many of who had just traditionally butchered their pig in early January. In the past, after the lighting of the fire there used to be an enactment of the story of St. Anthony, but today you just have come to our party, Saturday 27 January in Colledimezzo, to live our traditions with us. 🔥❤️
We will do our best to keep this calendar up to date, however in the case of last-minute cancellations due to adverse weather conditions, Covid outbreaks and so forth this may not always be possible. In these cases, you should contact the event organiser for a refund as we are not responsible for the events on the calendar, only compiling them into an easy list. As soon as we have news from an organiser when any event will be rescheduled we will update the calendar accordingly.
