Coffee & Cake: A Morning in Popoli with Katja & Andrew

Tuesday 6 June 2023 @ 09:30 - 13:00 CEST

Free
Life In Abruzzo Coffee Cake and Urban Tour Popoli

POSTPONED DUE TO BAD WEATHER!

Get to Know People & the Region!

Our Coffee and Cake mornings are part of our roving Life In Abruzzo ‘Pop-ups’!  They give our community a chance to meet other lovely members of our private Facebook group over coffee, cake and a new vista and to explore a new Abruzzo town with the help of some friendly locals.  The primary language of the event is English followed by the languages that our hosts speak, in the case of our Popoli event, Italian and German are offered too!  These excursions are free to join and carpools will be advertised in the group, but pre-registration is essential to attend!

Popoli is known as the Citta Del Acqua (City of Water), a dormant volcano underneath the town heats thermal springs which have had people visiting the town for healing since Roman times.  It’s also the birthplace of the ‘Vespa’ creator, Corradino d’Ascanio!

Program

Meet at Caffè Firenze, Piazza XX Settembre from 9.30 am. We recommend parking your car in the Conad supermarket car park nearby.

After coffee you will take a walk from Caffè Firenze through the Centro Storico before, (for those who would like to), heading up to the slightly steep but very manageable path to the castle – Castello Cantelmo at the top of the small town.

We will walk this path at a pace that suits all, reaching the castle within 20 minutes. Whilst little remains of the castle, it is a lovely spot and there are fabulous views to take in down to Popoli and across the Sulmona Peligna Valley.

Picnic in the Nature Reserve

For those that would like to continue after the visit to the castle, we will walk through the town across the river along a very pretty path to the Riserva Naturale del Sorgenti del Pescara. Approximately a 20 minutes walk. You can also, pick up your cars and drive directly to the Sorgenti if you prefer.   For those who are unable to walk up to the castle you can head to the Sorgenti earlier instead. If you are planning on visiting the Sorgenti then we suggest that you bring a picnic with you as it will be nearing lunchtime.

Riserva Naturale Sorgenti Pescara

If anyone is up for a short but steepish hike uphill from the Sorgenti, then Andrew will lead the way towards another fabulous viewpoint of the valley.

We recommend a good pair of shoes, preferably walking boots for those planning to walk up to the castle and up the path from the Sorgenti.  Don’t forget the money for coffee and cake at Caffè Firenze!

Terms and Conditions

Katja and Andrew will lead the walk on a ‘friends and equals’ basis. No fees are to be paid; no insurance or warranties are provided.
