National Catacomb Day
Sunday 16 October 2022 @ 09:30 - 17:00 CEST

This is a visit to do if you fancy celebrating National Catacomb Day in Abruzzo!
The term “catacomb” comes from the Greek language and means “near the hollows” and one pair in Abruzzo is in the north-west side of Colle Moro, Castelvecchio Subequo together with that of San Vittorino (near the Roman city of Amiternum). They constitute a notable testimony of the first spread of Christianity in the Abruzzo region. Discovered in 1943, the catacomb preserves inside graffiti that references a Christian cult. Almost all the graves have been desecrated over time by tomb robbers but the discovery of some remaining clothing and personal jewellery has led the archaeologists to believe it was being used from the 4th to the beginning of the 7th century. Artefacts that have been found in the 60-plus graves are preserved in the Museo del convento di San Francesco a Castelvecchio Subequo.
Escorted group visits will be available in both locations throughout the day but they will be closed for lunch!
