The nature reserve ‘Zompo Lo Schioppo’ is an ideal cooling-off spot in the province of L’Aquila.  It is a natural cathedral of trees and water, with a refuge to refresh yourself, trails to explore, and a lush, protected landscape that feeds both spirit and senses.  Its bottom pool is butterfly heaven!

It is a serene spot for relaxing by the tumbling stream and enjoying a packed lunch, not a swimming destination, which makes it ideal for little ones and those who are still learning to swim. The reserve has dedicated picnic areas at Piano Sacramento and Piazzale Lo Schioppo, equipped with tables, benches, barbecue pits and even restroom facilities. You can reserve a single table (8–10 people) for €10 or a double one (up to 20 people) for €20; an entry fee of €2 is charged on holidays and summer weekends, with free access for under‑6s

The reserve is just outside Morino (L’Aquila), and is a breathtaking haven of shade, water and woodland, perfect for cooling off on a warm day and enjoying a peaceful picnic by the stream.

 Why It’s Wonderful!

  • Protected wilderness: Established in 1987, the reserve covers around 1,025 ha with an additional 300 ha buffer zone, nestled on the eastern slopes of the Monti Ernici – linked to both the Monti Simbruini and the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo Lazio e Molise

  • Spectacular waterfall: The intermittent Zompo lo Schioppo waterfall plunges over 80 m (carved by underground karst springs), making it the highest in the central Apennines.

  • Rich forest canopy: A dense mix of centuries-old beech, holm oak, yew, birch, chestnut, oak, hornbeam, maple, and rare orchids creates a shaded retreat and summer respite, which is wonderful to picnic inside.

  • Wildlife paradise: Keep your eyes peeled for woodpeckers, dipper, roe deer, wolves, Marsican bears, eagles owls, peregrines, Alpine choughs, and more.
