Saturday 8 July 2023 @ 16:00 - Sunday 9 July 2023 @ 17:00 CEST

History buffs, get ready for a fascinating glimpse into the rich heritage of the Transumanza at the 160th Fiera della Pastorizia di Piano Roseto in Abruzzo this weekend! Set in possibly the world’s most beautiful panoramic fairground, this sheep fair helps you’ll step back in time and discover the historical significance of economic migration that has shaped the cultural fabric of the region.
For centuries, the Transumanza played a vital role in the livelihoods of Abruzzo’s shepherds. As the seasons changed, these skilled herdsmen would lead their flocks on an epic journey across vast distances down to Puglia, navigating rugged terrains and braving the elements. This annual migration allowed the sheep to graze on fresh pastures and find respite from the scorching summer heat or harsh winter cold.
The Transumanza was not merely a practical necessity; it was a way of life that fostered a strong sense of community and camaraderie among the shepherds and a huge celebration when they returned home and went up to this fair and market to sell their most precious flock. It was during these long journeys that knowledge, stories, and traditions were shared, binding the shepherding community together and preserving their unique way of life.
As you step foot onto the fairground, it’s very easy to imagine the love felt by the shepherds towards this fair up high amongst the cooling peaks of the Gran Sasso mountains, it symbolised not just home but that their families would eat for another year.
Your senses become a little overwhelmed by an explosion of colours and scents up here, it is a stunning setting, particularly at the golden hour. 38 local Teramana shepherds and their flocks will be participating and selling their delectable treats of artisanal cheeses that will tempt your taste buds. Food will be simple shepherd’s fare, arrosticini and a little bit of porchetta. There is plenty of music throughout the weekend including after an early Sunday Mass, a performance by the Nisea Choir.
