Abruzzo’s River Monarchy – Caramanico Terme’s Otter Trail

La Tana della Lontra is Abruzzo’s Otter Center was founded in 1989 by the State Forestry Corps aimed, nestled between the Orta and Orfento rivers just outside Caramanico Terme   Its first aim was to try and rear and reintroduce otters, one of Italy’s most endangered animals to the local natural environment.  However, after careful genetic testing, it was realised that they were incompatible with local southern Italian otters and it now spends its time researching these semi-wild otters to help protect their endangered cousins and helping create a unique children’s resource, La Tana della Lontra, (The Otter’s Den) for learning about this mysterious animal in the nearby Barrasso Museum.

This interactive space under the museum provides an educational program dedicated to the queen of the river the otter (lontra). Children get to learn all about otters and understand their importance to the local environment through fun and play. The set-up is original and amusing, bringing them into a model underground den to sit and learn ecology and habits just like an otter pup.

Majambiente is the custodian of this area of the Maiella National Park, a group of young local naturalists who clear the walking paths, and create and maintain educational resources.  They are guides who speak superb English, so they can translate for little ones and families on an evening hike in and around the centre.
