Planning to visit Bussi sul Tirino and for the Forte & Gentile photography exhibition? This small town in the Tirino Valley is also a great location to take some photos yourself!
A Little History to Bring Bussi to Life
Bussi sul Tirino has roots stretching back to Roman times, drawn to the freshwater springs and fertile valley. By the 11th century, life here centred on the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cartignano, built along an ancient route through the valley; its ruins still stand today and remain one of the area’s most evocative sights.
During the Middle Ages, the village slowly expanded uphill below what is now the Castello Mediceo. In the 16th century, the Medici family strengthened the castle and turned Bussi into a small but significant settlement guarding the routes to Gran Sasso.
Today, you can still sense these layers: the medieval upper town with its old stone and narrow steps, and the more modern lower area by the river. This mix gives Bussi its unique character.
Start with a Stroll up to the Castello Mediceo
Start your morning by exploring the centro storico, where narrow alleys wind gently uphill between old stone houses. At the top, the Castello Mediceo overlooks the valley, just as it has for centuries.
As you walk, take your time. Bussi is best enjoyed when you slow down and notice the details:
- warm stone façades
- old doorways and staircases
- sudden views towards the Gran Sasso peaks
This stroll is the perfect way to get ready to go and see the Forte e Gentile photography exhibition. It’s a natural warm-up for your eyes, with plenty of light, lines, and textures to notice.
