Best Place to Food Shop in Abruzzo

Bread Van Delivery in BascianellaWe have found the very best place to food shop in Abruzzo is not from the local typical Italian market but often right from your own village, in our case,  Bascianella. Most of the surrounding small mountain villages in the Gran Sasso Mountain area have a daily/half-weekly/weekly delivery that comes at a set time each day direct to the village.

The products are sourced from local farmers and small independent companies and taste 100 times better than anything you will ever buy at the supermarket. You can buy exactly how much you need for the day, thus reducing food that you don’t consume and best of all it doesn’t come packed and coated in plastics that will take a lifetime to biodegrade after you depart from your Italian ‘vacanza’.

What is truly fantastic about the service is that it allows the older members of Bascianella & the local community not to be reliant upon their children to buy their food for them – via these deliveries they can in affect almost look after themselves. This means they can stay put in their own homes without anyone telling them they can’t look after themselves as so often happens in the UK and which then puts such a strain on care for the elderly. In addition it creates a social occasion and social inclusion. Each day they can have a quick catch-up & gossip whilst they buy bread surreptitiously checking on each other’s health.

Of course the final accolade for this is how green this is – by a local business establishing their own van to serve the community, the villagers themselves don’t have to all independently drive down to the local town to buy – imagine how many litres of petrol that cuts down on and perhaps a technique that a country with wide open spaces like the USA should introduce to help cut down its giant carbon footprint.

Just a taste of Sig. Oliveri’s Dairy Selection

That is not to say we are holier than thou and don’t shop in supermarkets in Abruzzo … everyone needs staples like dried pasta, cleaning materials etc, but when you have green shopping service on your doorstep…
