About
Salviamo l’Orso is a non-profit, volunteer-led association working to save the Marsican brown bear from extinction by appealing to everyone who cares about this unique species and its natural environment.
How we Work
Our work pairs engagement with various authorities and organisations with practical on-the-ground interventions that help protect these rare and endangered bears. There are just 60 left.
The Threats the Bears Face
The health of the bears and their species’ chances of survival is negatively impacted by the encroachment of human activity and infrastructure
- Threats from humans (poaching, toxic substances, road accidents)
- Habitat fragmentation
- Disturbance
- Interaction with livestock
- Infrastructure, human activity and habitat changes
- Lack of administrative communication and action
- Genetic diversity and health
What we do
- EDUCATE: We contribute to the world’s understanding of this species and the threats it faces
- FACILITATE: We encourage cooperation between organisations which are responsible for protecting the species
- MONITOR: We make sure that any risks to the bears’ health and habitat are tracked and quickly reported
- ACT: We evaluate and fund bear conservation projects and our members and volunteers deliver them
