Map of Abruzzo
Four provinces, one coastline, three national parks. Where Abruzzo sits in Italy and how the region is laid out.
The Four Provinces
Abruzzo sits on the central Adriatic coast of Italy, two hours east of Rome. The region is divided into four provinces, and here is the trap most visitors fall into: each province shares its name with its capital city. Pescara the city is one specific place on the coast. Pescara the province is a much larger area that also contains hilltop towns like Loreto Aprutino and Penne, the Majella foothills, and parts of two national parks. The same applies to L'Aquila, Teramo and Chieti.
L'Aquila
The largest province by area. Mountainous and inland, covering most of western Abruzzo. Includes Sulmona, the Gran Sasso massif, and the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
Teramo
The northern province. Shorter coastline with resort towns like Roseto and Giulianova, plus Gran Sasso peaks and the Laga mountains inland.
Pescara
The smallest province. The capital is the largest city in Abruzzo and the regional airport. Inland are the wine hills around Loreto Aprutino and the start of the Majella park.
Chieti
The south-eastern province. The longest coastline, including the Costa dei Trabocchi and Vasto. Inland sweeps up to the Majella park and down to the Molise border.
