About

Standing 700 m above sea level on a dramatic rocky ridge in the Gran Sasso foothills, Poggio Umbricchio is a tiny medieval hamlet with sweeping views and a colourful past – it was once a notorious hideout for Abruzzo’s briganti. Today, its charm lies in quiet stone streets, unspoiled mountain landscapes, and the earthy scent of the prized white truffles that flourish in the surrounding woods.

Since 2003, the Pro Loco has been the guardian of this heritage, restoring treasures like the 19th-century De Giorgis Watermill and bringing the community together through events such as Tuber Magnatum – White Truffle and Noble Virtues, winner of the UNPLI “Quality Festival” award.  The proceeds of orders of fried eggs and shaved truffles served at the festa are donated to charity each year.
