Le Glorie di San Martino
Thursday 10 November 2022 @ 16:00 - 23:30 CET
The most famous San Martino festival in Abruzzo, with 3 giant bonfires that will fertilise the earth over the coming winter!
If you are in Abruzzo in November, and like your autumn nights peppered with gathering outdoors to watch colossal towering pyres lit to evoke rites and traditions from the distant past that celebrate new beginnings with song, Vino Novello, Scanno’s ‘Le Glorie di San Martino’ is unmissable!
Traditionally, (less the climate emergency), the winters are a little harsh and the days are short and foggy from early autumn. Before entering the long winter hibernation, tradition has it that, on the afternoon of November 10, the village and its citizens interrupt the monotony and animate the streets. The Scannesi families belong to three distinct districts, Plaja, San Martino and Cardella, and each gathers on the three different hills surrounding the historic centre.
On these hills, over the previous days, the ‘Glories of San Martino’ (the built fires) are hoisted, three very high stacks made with trunks and branches collected in the mountain areas.
At dusk, the Glories are set on fire, giving life to the fascinating explosion to the amazement of the spectators. Get there early to get a parking space!
