Hilde in Italy – Art and Life in Photographs by Hilde Lotz-Bauer

Hilde Lotz in Scanno

Hilde Lotz-Bauer’s photographs from 1930-1943 offer a unique perspective on Italy during this period. The opportunity to see 100 of her images in the Trastevere exhibition sounds like a wonderful experience, providing a glimpse into the magic of Scanno, Abruzzo and other Italian landscapes. Art has a special way of transporting us to different eras and immersing us in the beauty of the past.

She was a trailblazer in ‘street photography’ and the first professional photographer in Scanno, pre-dating Henri Cartier Bresson and other international photographers.  A large part of Lotz-Bauer’s known artistic output is heavily centred on everyday and celebratory moments in Abruzzo that she captured on her Leica. She turned her lens on people in small towns and the impoverished countryside where life went on as it had for centuries, revealing a largely undocumented Italy. People are shown, not lined up as ethnographic examples, but in everyday activity and social interaction.

The women she featured in the Scanno series wearing their ancient, handmade outfits, look like living masterpieces. Hilde paid close attention to the aesthetic composition and details, turning the captures into a distinctive artistic creation, rich with personal and documentary concepts, touching on critical and social aspects as well.

After moving to Florence in 1939 collaborations with art historians resulted in masterful photographs of the city’s architecture and art treasures by Michelangelo and other Renaissance artists. Hilde fell in love with art historian Wolfgang Lotz (1912-1981) and they married in 1941.

Two years later, wartime circumstances forced her to leave Italy with their baby son Christoph and resettle in Austria. The couple were reunited in Munich after the war, where their daughters Irene and Corinna were born. The family later moved to the United States, where Wolfgang taught at Vassar College and New York University. They returned to Europe in 1962 when Wolfgang became director of Rome’s Bibliotheca Hertziana. Hilde died in Munich in 1999.

You’ll get to see her amazing shots of sculptures, drawings, and architecture too! 📸✨ #Photography #ArtHistory #ExhibitionTime
