2nd December - Walks in Abruzzo for the Not-So-Nimble
Walks in Abruzzo for the Not-So-Sure-Footed and Slow Wanderers
Not everyone is as nimble and sure-footed as a mountain goat, and that’s completely okay.
Some people feel less steady on their feet, some like the comfort of a flat path, and others want a walk where every step feels easy. Abruzzo is more than just mountains and winding trails; it also has plenty of gentle, flat routes where you can go at your own pace and still see beautiful winter sights: a smidgen of blue, a low sun, jewel-coloured water.
These walks take you through mountains, lakes, rivers, and along the coast. Each one has a spot nearby where you can stop for a rich hot chocolate or a simple winter meal. The coastal walk is also easy to reach by train if you’d rather not drive.
Here are four easy winter walks to try!
1. Mountain – Prati di Tivo
A snowy, flat walk with great views
Prati di Tivo gives you the full mountain feel without the hard work.
Starting from the main car park, a wide, nearly flat path goes through a forest clearing and across snowy meadows with views of Gran Sasso and the Adriatic Sea. It’s an easy, refreshing winter walk, and there are places back in the car park for hot chocolate or a warm meal.
Why it works: easy-to-reach snow, steady paths, and no steep hills.
2. Lake – Lago di Scanno
A peaceful path along the shore of Abruzzo’s heart-shaped lake
The lower path by Lago di Scanno is primarily flat and runs close to the water, offering beautiful winter reflections. You’ll find benches, viewpoints, and cafés in the village for a drink or lunch after your walk.
Why it works: gentle path, safe ground, and peaceful views.

3. River – Il Tirino (Bussi and Capestrano)
A walk by a clear river on flat ground
Walk the Tirino banks (from Ponte San Martino, Capestrano): a gentle riverside stroll along one of Italy’s clearest rivers. Flat terrain, peaceful valley scenery, ideal for all ages, even in winter, and finish with a meal or hot drink nearby.
Why it works: flat ground, sheltered spots, and it’s beautiful even on cloudy days.
4. Coast – The Abruzzo Coastal Cycle Path
Wide, flat, and breezy by the sea, and easy to reach by train
The coastal cycle path is totally flat and perfect for winter walks.
You can reach parts of the route directly from train stops along the Adriatic line, which is handy if you don’t want to drive. It’s a steady, open walk by the sea, dipping into town’s cafés along the way for coffee, hot chocolate, or quick panini.

Why it works: no barriers, open all year, and easy to get to.
